[shared_counts]New York City is filled with spectacular attractions, whether you’re into the latest Broadway musicals or you want to taste-test the dishes of a trendy chef. Getting from point A to point B in a car can be difficult if you’re not used to city driving in the Big Apple. But you don’t have to worry about that if you’re living near a subway station.
Get a MetroCard, which is a refillable card used for your subway trips. You can pick it up at a station booth or MetroCard vending machine. The NYC subway system has several lines that are designated by color. You can get a general idea of how to get to your destination by looking at the map, but some trains are express and have limited stops. Use the MTA TripPlanner+ for an exact itinerary. If you prefer apps, iTrans NYC for iPhone and NYC Subway Times are two good options.
You have several official and unwritten rules to keep in mind when you’re on the subway. Take off backpacks and other bulky bags as you enter the train so you don’t hit anyone as you find a seat. If you’re standing up, the poles are designed for multiple people to hold onto them. Pregnant women, as well as elderly and disabled people, get priority on available seats.
The NYC subway system has a bit of a learning curve, but it becomes second nature soon enough. If you want to explore everything the city has to offer, you need a home base near a subway stop to get uptown and downtown easily. The Wellesley is a mere block away from the 72 Street Subway. Two blocks from Carlton Towers gets you to the Lexington Avenue–63 Street Subway Stop. The Towne House and Dryden East luxury NYC apartments are close to the famous Grand Central Terminal.
Don’t let city traffic deter you from getting the most out of your NYC lifestyle. The subway is the best way to reach all your favorite spots.
