[shared_counts]Winter is here, and with it, frigid cold and subzero temperatures. As a New Yorker, you pride yourself on your ability to take the cold. After all, it’s just business as usual, and coming home to a warm, welcoming apartment is the perfect way to end the day. But keeping your apartment heated and comfortable can sometimes come with a huge energy bill.
Here are a few ways you can stay warm and comfortable in your apartment while saving money on your monthly bill.
A lot of heat can be lost from windows. Cracks in the molding and gaps between windows can leak heat all day. Sealing these cracks and upgrading your window pane can prevent heat from leaking out.
You don’t live in every room at once, so why heat all the rooms simultaneously with central heating? It makes more sense to invest in a space heater to keep you warm, especially while you sleep. According to Consumer Reports, this cuts out the need to keep centralized heating on, which can get really expensive during the colder months in the city.

Not all curtains are created equal. Some fabrics, such as lace, are more breathable, which allows colder outside air to enter the room. You might want to consider heavier, more insulated drapes that are woven in layers. These drapes are better at blocking out the cold air because they contain a layer of insulation between densely woven fibers to keep air from flowing freely.
Your oven is basically a huge furnace. It heats up the kitchen whenever you need it to bake. So why not take advantage of it? Make baked dishes for dinner a few nights a week and it will do wonders by doubling as your heat source. You could have a warm retreat from the outside weather and a hot meal too.

Using a regular old blanket might not cut it when snow is piling up outside and temperatures are in the single digits. Neither will running the heating for hours on end when you’re staying in for the weekend. But an electric blanket would be the perfect tool to have handy on such an occasion. You don’t want to be caught in a cold apartment without one!
