[shared_counts]When you’re shopping for Philly apartments, you know location is everything. You’ve considered the distance to highways and SEPTA stations to get to work, and you’ve put great amenities high on your list. Have you considered just how fun your new neighborhood might be? It’s more important than you think; after all, the quality of your life depends a lot on how you spend your free time.
Luckily, Old City Philadelphia offers daytime and nighttime activities for everyone. Check out some of the best attractions below — and don’t be surprised if you’re sold on living in Old City!
Old City apartments are within easy walking distance to some of the most important sites in U.S. history. Bustling Market Street is the gateway to Independence National Historical Park, which includes must-see spots like the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were signed. For history buffs who just can’t get enough, check out the Betsy Ross House and the archaeological site of Benjamin Franklin’s house, just a few blocks away.
Foodies and fans of history alike will enjoy dining at the City Tavern, where renowned chef Walter Steib has recreated authentic 18th century meals for modern palates. Ethnic cuisines abound in upscale settings here as well. Try Amada for Spanish tapas and a great wine list, or check out Buddakan for Asian-inspired bistro fare. The Arden Theater Company on Second Street produces Main Stage plays for adults, but there are separate children’s shows throughout the year. You can also visit the Painted Bride Art Center, a nearby gallery space that hosts concerts, dances and cultural performance; check out the latest Hollywood releases and independent films at the Ritz Five.
Many people forget Philadelphia has its own waterfront along the Delaware River. Old City is just a short hop to Penn’s Landing, which has a boardwalk area and hosts popular outdoor concerts and events in the summer. The Independence Seaport Museum is home to several historic ships, and it’s a great place to catch fireworks on the Fourth of July or New Year’s.
