Spring is approaching, and Philadelphia residents are gearing up for warmer weather and outdoor adventures in the many green spaces throughout the city. Franklin Square, one of the five public squares originally conceived by William Penn in his blueprint for the city, is among the most-visited green spaces in Philly and hosts an array of seasonal attractions and events. Conveniently situated just minutes from our Market Street and Papermill Lofts apartment rentals, Franklin Square is a popular spot for Philly residents!

Here is what to expect on a visit to Franklin Square in 2018!

Franklin Square Fountain

Built in 1838, Franklin Square Fountain is believed to be the oldest surviving fountain in Philadelphia’s five historic public squares. After falling into disrepair, the fountain has been restored to its former glory and now serves as the focal point of Franklin Square.

Parx Liberty Carousel

Situated northwest of Franklin Square Fountain, Parx Liberty Carousel is the only merry-go-round in Center City. This All-American style amusement ride celebrates Philadelphia’s rich carousel-making heritage and features horses made from carousel molds dating back to the late 1800s.

Revitalized in 2006, Franklin Square Playground provides entertainment for children of all ages. The soft-surface play space with infant swings and a sandbox is perfect for young children, while older children will love the vast array of slides, climbing structures and seat swings.

Living Flame Memorial

Designed by Reginald E. Beauchamp and dedicated in 1976, the Living Flame Memorial is the one of only a few memorials in the United States that honors both fallen police officers and firefighters. A memorial service is held at the Living Flame Memorial in May each year.

Philly Mini Golf

Located north of Franklin Square Fountain, Philly Mini Golf is the only mini golf course in Center City. Featuring 18 holes inspired by iconic local landmarks, this fun-filled course is the perfect place to practice your putt while learning about Philadelphia’s fascinating history.

Franklin Square is just one of many must-see attractions in Philly. If you’re planning to move to the city and want to be at the heart of all the action, be sure to check out our Philadelphia apartments.
