Some people are history buffs who prefer to do more than read about the past – their dream is to live among sites of historical significance. These folks learn all they can about a famous city and then take pride in serving as unofficial local ambassadors and tour guides to out-of-town guests. Does this resonate with you? Imagine how amazing it would be to step out the front door of your apartment and be able to take a casual stroll to visit the Liberty Bell.
Chambers of Commerce all across this great land make various claims to historical fame. But Philly doesn’t need to explain why it’s a legit historical destination. People learn the nuts and bolts early on – in elementary or middle school. In case you need a refresher, though, Philadelphia was established in 1682. Every founding father of America has been here. In fact, they chose this site to sign the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Specifically, those things happened at Independence Hall (520 Chestnut Street) in Old City, Philly, Pa.
You may have never heard of Elfreth’s Alley. This picturesque Old City landmark is America’s oldest residential street. Built in 1702, it’s a well-preserved example of colonial architecture. Not far from Elfreth’s Alley is the site of the circa-1740 home Betsy Ross lived in, where it’s widely believed she sewed the first U.S. flag.
And we would be remiss if we neglected to mention the corner of 6th and Market Streets in Old City, Philly. The site of that cracked yet stalwart sign of democracy: the Liberty Bell. Let freedom ring!
Living in Old City allows you to enjoy the best of both worlds. You’ll be in the midst of one of the country’s most progressive, dynamic and diverse cities: Philadelphia. You’ll also be able to enjoy, up close and personal, some of the country’s most celebrated and sacred sites. Others dream about planning a historical excursion to Philly. You can live that dream on a daily basis, and in updated style, here.
