THREE WAYS TO CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH IN PHILADELPHIA

Black History Month is a time to honor the many achievements of African-Americans in our nation’s history. From civic leaders and scientists to world-renowned athletes, Black History Month celebrates the important contributions made by past and present figures. While mainly observed in the USA, this annual event is also marked by celebrations in Canada and the UK.

Here are our top picks for Black History Month events in the Greater Philadelphia area.

1. Black History Month at the Free Library of Philadelphia

The Free Library of Philadelphia will observe Black History Month with a myriad of exciting events. This includes a lecture on the Harlem Renaissance along with a screening of the film, Paul Robeson. Famed author, Brittney Cooper, will also discuss her book: Eloquent Rage: A Black Feminist Discovers Her Superpower and much more. 2. The National Constitution Center

The National Constitution Center will also mark Black History Month with a series of interactive tours. These shows and self-guided tours highlight important moments in African-American history. From dazzling rare artifacts to the signed Emancipation Proclamation, this event a must for anyone wishing to learn more about African-American contributions in the USA. There will also be items on display from President Barack Obama’s inauguration.

3. Independence National Historic Park

You can also visit the MLK statue and several citywide sculptures honoring the iconic civil rights leader. The Penn Museum will even showcase a gallery of African culture masks, sculptures and textiles. This is an educational, insightful and informative display that should not be missed.
